Cover: Under metabolic burdens, the ER stress effector miR-24 is induced in pancreatic Β cells. The elevated miR-24 converts Β cells into a fetal state (dedifferentiation) to avoid programmed cell death (apoptosis), thus conserving the ‘fighting strength’. Once the metabolic burdens are remitted and the hyperglycemia is controlled, inhibition of miR-24 might be an attractive therapeutic approach to reviving functional Β cell number and treating diabetes.
