Cover: Maternal transcription factor Eomesodermin a (Eomesa) participates in transcriptional activation of zygotic nodal genes. Eomesa derived from an egg induces zygotic mxtx2 expression, and cooperates with synthesized Mxtx2 to promote nodal gene expression. Maternal β-catenin 2 activates nodal gene expression in the dorsal margin. Nodal proteins regulate their own expression and further induce the expression of downstream mesendodermal genes. The background shows zebrafish embryos at 24-26 h with anterior to the right. See pages 272–285 by Xu et al. for details.
