Cover: During somitogenesis in zebrafish, angioblasts for dorsal aorta (maroon) and cardinal vein (cyan) in the posterior lateral plate mesoderm (LPM) migrate medially to form the dorsal aorta and the cardinal vein, respectively. Meanwhile, primitive hematopoietic precursors (red) in the LPM migrate medially and a subset of somitic cells (chimeric colors) within somites migrate ventromedially to enter the vessels as blood cells. The somite-derived hematopoietic cells become hematopoietic stem cells surviving for life time. The background shows Tg(foxc1b:EOS;fmyhc2:gfp) embryos and adult fish harboring GFP+ cells.
